70x2020 conference, pathology chair candidate's presentation highlight week's agenda
Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming week at the Medical Center.
Monday, Oct. 23
CDC division director to keynote annual 70v2020 conference
Dr. Lisa C. Richardson, director of the Center for Disease Control’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, will give the keynote address, “Moving Patients to Screening: Strategies to Reach the Unscreened,” for the 70x2020 Colorectal Screening Initiative’s annual conference, scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.
Others scheduled to speak during the conference include Dr. John Ruckdeschel, UMMC Cancer Institute director and Ergon Chair in Cancer Research; Chigozie Udemgba, director of the Mississippi State Department of Health Comprehensive Cancer Control Program; Dr. John McKee, president of the Mississippi Gastroenterology Society; and Dr. Elizabeth North, head of the Mississippi State University Extension Service’s agricultural communications.
The 70x2020 Colorectal Screening Initiative is a statewide organization working to see 70 percent of eligible Mississippians screened for colorectal cancer by 2020. All Medical Center faculty and staff are invited. A light breakfast and lunch will be available.

Tufts professor to illuminate scientist, teacher partnerships
Dr Karina F. Meiri, professor in the Department of Developmental, Molecular and Chemical Biology at the Tufts University School of Medicine, will present “Scientist/teacher Partnerships: Philosophies and Metrics for Success,” from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in classroom 3A (room 318 in the North Wing).

Pathology chair candidate to talk 21st Century growth
Dr. Tim Allen, professor of pathology, director of anatomic pathology and program director of surgical pathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch and candidate for chair of pathology at UMMC, will present the seminar, “UMMC Department of Pathology – Growing into the 21st Century,” from noon-12:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in lecture hall 122 of the new School of Medicine academic building.

Missouri professor to review receptor activation’s role in relaxation
Dr. James R. Sowers, professor of medicine and physiology, Thomas W. and Joan F. Burns Chair in Diabetology and director of the Center for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Health at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, will present “Role of Cell Specific Mineralocorticoid Receptor Activation in Cardiovascular Stiffness and Impaired Relaxation” at noon on Thursday, Oct. 26, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.
The seminar is sponsored by the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center and the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research.

Concert dedicated to Alzheimer’s benefits The MIND Center
The MIND Center and the Mississippi Chorus will host a concert, "Sing Anything,” dedicated to those who have been touched by Alzheimer’s disease, with three performances scheduled from Friday-Sunday, Oct. 27-29.
Cara Mund, Miss America 2018, the Mississippi Chorus, orchestra and soloists will take part in the performances, which will include Robert S. Cohen’s choral masterpiece “Alzheimer’s Stories.” All proceeds will fund The MIND Center's Alzheimer's research.
Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, at Woodland Hills Baptist Church in Fondren; 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Bologna Performing Arts Center in Cleveland; and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Link Centre in Tupelo.

Dr. Peter A. Doris, professor of molecular medicine, Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth Distinguished University Chair in Metabolic and Inflammatory Diseases and director of the Center for Human Genetics Medicine at the University of Texas Medical School, Houston, will present the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology seminar, “Genetic Mechanisms of Kidney Disease and Brain Injury in Hypertensive Rats,” at noon on Monday, Oct. 30, in room 6A.

HudsonAlpha scientist to help understand kidney, cardio variants
Dr. Jeremy Prokop, senior scientist at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, Huntsville, Alabama, will give the Department of Biochemistry presentation, “Understanding Genomic Variants Using Data to Knowledge Application to Kidney and Cardiovascular Biology,” at 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, in classroom 3A.

Chancellor, vice chancellor to speak at faculty meeting
Dr. Jeffrey Vitter, University of Mississippi chancellor, and Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs, are scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 31, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).
Vitter and Woodward will provide an update on the university and the Medical Center for the next fiscal year. The agenda also will include a recognition of faculty with 20 years of service.

Delta Heath Alliance rep to discuss health disparities in MS
Shenetta Drone, associate vice president of health information technology grants for the Delta Health Alliance, will discuss health disparities most prominent in Mississippi and methods to create sustainable, community-level change from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).
The presentation is sponsored by the UMMC chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. The DHA works in the Mississippi Delta to improve access to health services, promote healthier lifestyles and expand educational opportunities in some of Mississippi’s most underserved communities.
